John 16:18 (KJV)
They said therefore, What is this that he saith, A little while? we cannot tell what he saith.
It seems to me that this is the root question among believers still today. “What is… A little while?”
The question surrounds the departure of the Lord and His return. He said He would depart in a little while and that they would weep. He said after a little while He would return, and they would rejoice. It was that night that He was taken from them in the Garden. He was then crucified the next day. The circumstances certainly created fear, grief, and weeping among them. Sorrow filled their hearts.
It was just three days and nights after that they received word and then proof of His resurrection. There would have been great rejoicing though, in this case, the thing was so incredible that they had trouble processing it.
He was seen alive of them for forty days. But after a little while He was taken up from them and a cloud received Him out of their sight. Angels came to them as they stood gazing into heaven and promised that “after a little while” He would come again.
Perhaps the sorrow at Christ’s departure has faded with time, but it has not died out. The world is tough to live in and the Christian needs to see the Lord. It will only be a little while until Jesus comes again. At that moment, when the trump of God sounds, oh, the rejoicing there will be.
Hold on child of God. Jesus is coming, “in a little while.”
