A third part of thee shall die with the pestilence, and with famine shall they be consumed in the midst of thee: and a third part shall fall by the sword round about thee; and I will scatter a third part into all the winds, and I will draw out a sword after them.
God prophesied a threefold judgment upon Israel designed to satisfy His anger:
- Those judged by famine and pestilence
- Those judged by the sword
- Those scattered and chased by the sword
The first two parts were accomplished, I think, with the Babylonian captivity. The final judgment continues to this day where Israel, even in their own land, face regular attacks by their enemies. All of these years they have found no home among the other nations and, even in their home they find the sword.
The first thing that comes to mind is the accuracy and truth of the Bible. It has been, for the Jews, exactly what God said it would be.
The second thing that comes to mind is thanksgiving for the remnant. It is a small band, woven into the culture of the local church today, but it exists nonetheless. It is a seed of truth in the world that will one day end in all of Israel confessing Jesus Christ as their Lord and Saviour.
Just as the other prophecies concerning Israel have been and are being fulfilled, so these prophecies will find their fulfillment in the good time of God.
