Also Amaziah said unto Amos, O thou seer, go, flee thee away into the land of Judah, and there eat bread, and prophesy there:
But prophesy not again any more at Bethel: for it is the king’s chapel, and it is the king’s court.
Here is a very interesting passage of Scripture, especially given our current situation with COVID-19. Amos was called of God as a prophet to the northern kingdom of Israel. Frankly, his intercessions had spared judgment upon the nation more than once. But his message was a loud sound of warning.
Word got to the king. He wasn’t too happy about this preacher’s negative tone but chose not to punish him (at first). What he did was to urge the prophet to go down to Judah, I assume because he thought his kind of preaching would be better received there.
I am afraid there are a number of people who are taking Amaziah’s advice today, or at least considering it. They’re talking about pulling up stakes and heading to places where the political and spiritual climate is more tolerant of their own views and practices.
Amos said he couldn’t do that. God had placed him where he was. To flee to a different place would be as liable of disobedience as Jonah was fleeing to Tarshish rather than Nineveh. His place, his duty, his responsibility was in Israel.
Regardless of the cost, it was his calling.
