Nevertheless when it shall turn to the Lord, the vail shall be taken away.
The “it” this verse speaks of is the heart from verse fifteen. Usually, we think of the heart as the seat of affection. That is a biblical application but the one specifically applied here is the mind. We find that in verse fourteen.
Perhaps the most appropriate way to understand this passage is to see the connection between the heart and the mind. The Bible says, Lamentations 3:51 (KJV) Mine eye affecteth mine heart because of all the daughters of my city. Conversely, our affections, those things we love, influence the way our minds see and interpret what is around us.
This passage addresses the Jews specifically. The Jews have no affection for Jesus and therefore have a poor understanding of even the Old Testament portion of God’s Word. It is a mistake, by the way, to believe we can understand the Old Testament better by learning from the Jews. The Bible says they are blinded. But the Bible says that whenever their heart turns to the Lord the veil is taken away. They can then understand the Bible in ways they could not have seen before.
What is true for the Jew is equally true of all others. The Bible is a mystery, a closed book, a cloaked parable when the heart is not affected for Jesus. But let the heart of a man, any man, turn to the Lord and he will find that the Bible opens itself to them as the Holy Spirit, now dwelling in them, shines light on those once darkened pages.
