And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence.

The heart of the believer, and of His church, which is His body and over which He is the head, must be that Jesus Christ receives first place. His will, His glory, His interests must be primary over any that are our own.
We must learn to subordinate those affections, influences, and interests that are personal and outside of His to Him. To suggest they do not exist would be dishonest with our nature and with reality. To acknowledge and identify them gives us more ability to bring them into submission.
