And he looked this way and that way, and when he saw that there was no man, he slew the Egyptian, and hid him in the sand.
Self-defense instructors teach their students to be aware of their surroundings. The Egyptian Moses killed, for instance, was so engrossed in the object of his beating that he did not see Moses. He perhaps could have prevented his death had he seen to protect himself.
These same instructors teach their students to spot signals of evil intent on the part of others. One of those signals is looking “this way and that way.” A guy planning an evil action takes a look at his surroundings to see if anyone might try to stop him or anyone who might be able to identify him for doing the evil thing.
Unlike his victim, Moses did look this way and that way. But there were witnesses he did not take into account.
- He did not take into account that the Hebrew he rescued would surely tell others
- He did not take into account that “the eyes of the Lord are in every place beholding the evil and the good”[1]
I reckon that the Hebrew told others his experience, and that word got around very quickly. I also believe God, whose eyes had already been on the children of Israel, saw and, though Moses could not have known it, planned to use this event for His purpose.
I’ve never met a soul who doesn’t sometimes find himself in a pressure situation. It is tempting in those times to look about and come up with a plan all our own. We may believe no one sees to help us. We might assume no one sees to report us.
It’s not so.
God always sees.
[1] Proverbs 15:3 (KJV)
The eyes of the LORD are in every place, beholding the evil and the good.
