It was therefore necessary that the patterns of things in the heavens should be purified with these; but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these.
It seems to me that this passage ought to be understood in light of,
Hebrews 9:1-5 (KJV)
Then verily the first covenant had also ordinances of divine service, and a worldly sanctuary.
For there was a tabernacle made; the first, wherein was the candlestick, and the table, and the shewbread; which is called the sanctuary.
And after the second veil, the tabernacle which is called the Holiest of all;
Which had the golden censer, and the ark of the covenant overlaid round about with gold, wherein was the golden pot that had manna, and Aaron’s rod that budded, and the tables of the covenant;
And over it the cherubims of glory shadowing the mercyseat; of which we cannot now speak particularly.
The pattern of the tabernacle was in two parts.
The first, entered regularly by ordinary priests, answered to a “worldly sanctuary.”
Things that were necessary but never perfect happened there. Things in there ran out, spoiled and had to be refreshed. It required regular care because it was not eternal in value.
The second was much different. It was entered into but once a year and only by one man.
There was nothing inside that did or would spoil. There was no work that must be performed inside. What happened in there was all of God on behalf of man.
The first part answers to those necessary elements of worship and service while we wait for Christ’s return on this earth. We never do what we do perfectly. We constantly have to tweak and adjust and revive and restore. But we are assured that, regardless our imperfections, there is a second, deeper, eternal and absolutely perfect place in our faith. It is that which we cannot do and that which has therefore already been done. It is the finished, complete. and perfect work of Christ.
It is on Christ alone I stand.
