And Aaron shall cast lots upon the two goats; one lot for the LORD, and the other lot for the scapegoat.[1]
Most teaching on this passage focuses on the effect of this offering. The blood of the sacrificed animal represents the atonement of sins. The animal upon which the sins of the people are confessed and then it is released in the wilderness represents the removal of our sins through a living sacrifice, Jesus Christ.
I was thinking of the casting of the lots on these two animals. They were brought to the tabernacle on totally equal terms. The lot was cast. One animal was for the LORD, the other was the scapegoat. I imagine people thinking that the scapegoat was the “lucky” animal. It got to continue its life in freedom. The other animal died and was consumed before the LORD. Such thinking would be spiritually incorrect. The scapegoat would, for the rest of its life, bear the blood of the dead one. It would bear the burden, if you will, of sin. Like Cain, it was released to wander, free but free from all that had ever cared for it.
The animal consumed for the LORD was the truly free one. If we think of it in the sense of being a living sacrifice, the person who gives himself or herself completely to the LORD is truly free, so much more so than the one who flees to live for themselves in the wilderness of the earth.
