Speak unto all the congregation of the children of Israel, and say unto them, Ye shall be holy: for I the LORD your God am holy.
Ye shall fear every man his mother, and his father, and keep my sabbaths: I am the LORD your God.
A careful look at the instructions in this chapter reveals a close, if not parallel to the Ten Commandments. One could say that this chapter expands and explains those Commandments. They were not merely a piece of the puzzle that is the Mosaic Law; they were the foundation upon which all the law rested. So important were they that, when upon the disobedience of Israel at the foot of Mt Sinai the original copy was broken, God brought Moses to the top of the mountain once again to provide another copy.
The foundation of all the law was the Ten Commandments. And the foundation for them is this unchangeable truth, “I am the Lord your God.”
I believe this still holds true. The Christian behaves the way He does, not to make himself holy before God but because the God he loves is holy.
