And when the days of her purifying are fulfilled, for a son, or for a daughter, she shall bring a lamb of the first year for a burnt offering, and a young pigeon, or a turtledove, for a sin offering, unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, unto the priest:
Who shall offer it before the LORD, and make an atonement for her; and she shall be cleansed from the issue of her blood. This is the law for her that hath born a male or a female.
And if she be not able to bring a lamb, then she shall bring two turtles, or two young pigeons; the one for the burnt offering, and the other for a sin offering: and the priest shall make an atonement for her, and she shall be clean.
I see in this passage, and others similar to it, one of the blessed contradictions of the Word of God.
On the one hand, there is grace
If the woman was not able, for whatever reason, financial, or practical, to bring the appropriate sacrifice, a lamb, she could offer two young pigeons instead.
Such is the grace of God. There is no spiritual requirement that is out of reach of anyone. The rich the poor, the young the old, the male the female. There is nothing hindering anyone from coming to the LORD.
On the other hand, any thinking person had to know a couple of birds couldn’t replace a whole lamb
Here is the plain truth of all of the animal sacrifices; they were all utterly insufficient. None of them from the least costly to the costliest could take away sin. Everyone must have known that. There was frustration and futility built into the sacrificial system. It never was mean to satisfy the soul. It was intended to leave the yearning heart longing for something – better.
That something is Someone
The sacrifice of Christ is sufficient, satisfying, and solely capable of taking away the sins of all mankind. At the same time, it is more costly than anyone could pay and yet freely given to all who will receive it.
