That brought you out of the land of Egypt, to be your God: I am the LORD.
Adam Clarke, “God, infinite in his own perfections, has no need of his creatures; but they need him; and, as a source of endless felicity, he opens himself to all his intelligent offspring.”
That God had brought them out of Egypt was fresh on their minds, though they often forgot that and blamed it on Moses. The plaques He had brought upon Egypt, and thereby forced that nation to release them, were powerful and undeniable. How could they forget? They would never forget!
God tells them then two important truths;
Why He brought them out
To be their God. They needed Him. He did not need them. While in Egypt they had other forces driving them and even protecting them. Away from Egypt, they were free to follow God’s call upon their lives. Be careful of anything, however good, that prevents you from obeying the Lord according to as He guides your conscience. Be careful also of anything, however good, that supposes to care for, protect, and provide for you in the place of God.
Who He is
I am the LORD. Gill writes, “…that hath sovereign right unto them, and claim upon them, and therefore they ought to be subject to his will, and observe his laws ordinances.” He is the Lord. Be subject to Him.
