Deuteronomy 5:2-3 (KJV) For The Living

Deuteronomy 5:2-3 (KJV)

The LORD our God made a covenant with us in Horeb.
The LORD made not this covenant with our fathers, but with us, even us, who are all of us here alive this day.

Gill says Horeb is one of two tops of the same mountain that is Sinai.

Moses was, at this moment, near to the river Jordan. His journey with Israel was practically finished. In the next verse, he specifically says that the covenant that the Lord made at Horeb was to the present generation, not to their fathers but to those who were alive at that very moment.

But when God made the covenant, it was their fathers who were the adult generation. These standing before Moses here were children at best, perhaps not even born, when the Ten Commandments were given on Sinai.

Here’s the lesson, the Word of God is always intended for the generation alive: living, breathing, and making choices at the time. It never changes. It doesn’t adjust to fit climate, culture, or modern norms.

But it is always relevant, and expressly for the living of the day.
