And he humbled thee, and suffered thee to hunger, and fed thee with manna, which thou knewest not, neither did thy fathers know; that he might make thee know that man doth not live by bread only, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of the LORD doth man live.
Israel was God’s chosen nation. They were loved and blessed. God had already established that there was no nation so great as they.
- It was for them He had parted the Red Sea and would part the Jordan River.
- It was with them He had dwelt in the pillar of fire and the pillar of cloud.
- It was through them all nations of the earth would be blessed.
Jesus came to seek and to save the lost through the children of Israel.
But here we are reminded that God humbled them, allowed them to suffer hunger and fed them with manna. And here we are told why. God wanted to teach them that man does not live by bread alone but by every Word of God.
Here is the answer to why bad things, hard things, difficult things happen to good people. Through those things, God blesses them with the knowledge, the realization, and the strength to live not in good things but in the truths God has given in his Word.
A lost man might possess all the good this land can give. But he, like all of us, will eventually die. And then, in eternity he will have nothing. The Christian, like Lazarus, may suffer in this life, but in eternity, for all eternity, he will be comforted.
