Understand therefore, that the LORD thy God giveth thee not this good land to possess it for thy righteousness; for thou art a stiffnecked people.
God told Israel that the nation they were about to possess was, in fact, greater and mightier than they were. They had:
- Great cities
- Fenced walls and
- Giant people
There was no way Israel would possess this land in their own power. They had to understand ahead of time that it was God who would defeat them.
Further, God told Israel that it was not because they were more righteous than the others that he would give them the land. It was because of the wickedness of the Canaanites they would be driven out but not because of the righteousness of Israel. They had to understand that they had not earned the privilege of being the victor. They were themselves a stiff-necked people.
Christians today would do well to get hold of this truth. It is not because we are righteous that we earn God’s favor, power, or blessings. We don’t pay a price for His anointing. We don’t earn the ear of God through our obedience. We don’t somehow deserve His favor because we win souls or support missions. We have God’s favor, as children of God, because we have Jesus.
The key to successful Christian living is to understand this, appreciate Jesus, and remain close to Him.
