Joshua 9:14 (KJV) Asking Counsel of the Lord

Joshua 9:14 (KJV)

And the men took of their victuals, and asked not counsel at the mouth of the LORD.

I wish to consider what it would have meant to ask counsel at the mouth of the Lord.

It seems to me that this is an all too often problem in our current day. Christians don’t know how to ask counsel of the Lord; presume they have asked counsel of the Lord, and therefore seldom do ask counsel at the mouth of the Lord.

First, in Israel’s case, it would have been through Joshua
At least that is where the counsel came in the matter of Jericho and even in the matter of dealing with Achan after Ai.

Second, this would certainly have involved Joshua getting alone
Which was, once again, the case with both Jericho and then with dealing with Achan. It was also the case in the second assault on Ai.

Third, it would have involved several days
If they had but waited three days, the matter with the Gibeonites would have revealed itself.

Israel did not ask counsel at the mouth of the Lord, and it resulted in a form of bondage to the Gideonites that lasted for centuries.  It worked out. But that a thing turns out ok is not the same as a thing being right.
