And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.
I love this quote I found in Jamieson-Fausset-Brown concerning this verse, “’But what is this I see?’ exclaims stately Bishop Hall. ‘Satan himself with a Bible under his arm and a text in his mouth!’”
Jesus countered every one of Satan’s temptations with, “It is written”. Satan attempted to use the Bible against Jesus in the same manner. Apparently, he thought if he used Scripture first, he could silence the Word of God before the Living Word could use it. He was mistaken.
We must never expect that the adversary of our faith is without knowledge of the Bible. Satan is an expert in it. However, I note that it is the only argument Jesus gave while it is but one of many the devil used.
We would do best if we always relied on the Bible.
