And when he looked on him, he was afraid, and said, What is it, Lord? And he said unto him, Thy prayers and thine alms are come up for a memorial before God.
An appropriate response, especially to a first encounter with almighty God, is fear. Unfortunately, there is far too little of that in United States Christianity.
- We have learned to focus on His grace and not His holiness
- We concentrate on His goodness and not His wrath
- We think of heaven without a thought about hell
- We want our best life now without preparing for eternity
The goodness of God finds its luster in the darkness of impending doom. Except that God saves us,
- We are corrupt, destined for hell
- We are lost and headed for destruction
- We are sinful and will end in destruction
Behold the goodness and severity of the Lord.[1]
We can’t have the one until we reckon with the other.
[1] Romans 11:22 (KJV)
Behold therefore the goodness and severity of God: on them which fell, severity; but toward thee, goodness, if thou continue in his goodness: otherwise thou also shalt be cut off.
