But where shall wisdom be found? and where is the place of understanding?
Man knoweth not the price thereof; neither is it found in the land of the living.
This is just about as important a thing as a man can ever consider. “Where shall wisdom be found?” Seriously, it’s not as important as one’s salvation. “How should a man be just with God?”[1] That is the most important question. But once that one is answered, this is a close second.
Note, the question concerns wisdom, not knowledge. There is a huge difference.
Job instructs us that:
- Wisdom cannot be found in the land of the living.
- Men cannot pass it on. It is not found in books.
- Wisdom cannot be discovered by searching.
It’s not in the depths of the sea. Wisdom cannot be purchased for money. No amount of precious commodity can buy it.
Experience can lead to wisdom, but it is generally at the cost of destruction and death.[2]
There is only one way to have wisdom. “The fear of the Lord, that is wisdom.”[3]
[1] Job 9:2 (KJV)
I know it is so of a truth: but how should man be just with God?
[2] Job 28:22 (KJV)
Destruction and death say, We have heard the fame thereof with our ears.
[3] Job 28:28 (KJV)
And unto man he said, Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding.
