And hast not shut me up into the hand of the enemy: thou hast set my feet in a large room.
The setting is David’s flight from King Saul. Consider him in the cave. Saul’s men were at the mouth, and Saul even went into the cave. David could have been trapped, shut up into the enemy’s hand.
That’s not what happened. He was close enough to Saul to take a piece of his garment. But it was not until they were out of the cave and there was space enough to maneuver that David revealed himself.
Consider 1 Corinthians 10:13 (KJV)
There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.
No doubt we all find ourselves in troublesome places. They often feel confined and closed in. We feel like there is no way to escape the inevitable. Not so. God always gives us room to move, to access grace. God always makes for us a way to escape. God always provides us with a means to bear up under the temptation.
