This I had, because I kept thy precepts.
I am curious about what it is he has because he had kept God’s precepts. The passage does not specifically say. Gill offers, I think it is, three speculations:
- Comfort
- Knowledge of God’s name and
- Grace to keep God’s Word
I think the most likely would be that he had the benefits listed in the previous seven verses of this stanza:
Hope- Quickening
- Strength in persecution
- Comfort
- Soberness
- Song
- Faith in the night
Perhaps it is best that we do not have a precise answer. It opens the possibility that all that we have as gracious gifts from the Lord are the result of keeping His precepts.
God’s grace is not an item that can be purchased by obedience. However, most of God’s gracious benefits are realized through the study of His Word and are accessed, unwrapped, and personalized through following the principles we find in the Word of God.
