Isaiah 36:16-17 Like Your Own

Isaiah 36:16-17 (KJV)

Hearken not to Hezekiah: for thus saith the king of Assyria, Make an agreement with me by a present, and come out to me: and eat ye every one of his vine, and every one of his fig tree, and drink ye every one the waters of his own cistern;

Until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of corn and wine, a land of bread and vineyards.

Such wickedness and deception in our world! Sennacherib offered the people of Jerusalem that, if they would reject the leadership of their king and give him presents, he would allow them to:

·       Return to their homes outside the city walls

·       Enjoy the fruits of their own labor in their fields and

·       Rest in the refreshing waters of their own wells

But then, verse 17 hints at the true consequences,

Until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of corn and wine, a land of bread and vineyards.

It would be wisest to ignore everything after, "Until I come and take you away."

The world, the flesh and the devil want to replace everything God gives. They will make their replacements sound delightful. They will even let them be similar. But they are not of the Lord. Soon enough he’ll come to spoil you.

It's no fun being holed up in a city besieged by an enemy of God.

It’s far worse in the long run to surrender the will of God and become dependent upon shallow substitutes of God’s blessing.
