Matthew 22:31 (KJV) Have Ye Not Read?

Matthew 22:31 (KJV)

But as touching the resurrection of the dead, have ye not read that which was spoken unto you by God, saying,

The questions in this chapter were specifically phrased to entangle Jesus in His words. Jesus handled each question, coming at Him from different and conflicting doctrinal viewpoints, with poise and complete honesty. I think it is often best not to answer a fool in his folly. But I am not Jesus. I can get tripped up in my words. Never Jesus.

The Sadducees did not believe in the resurrection and thought to entangle Him with an impossible situation. Jesus’ answer addressed their:

  • Ignorance of the Scriptures and
  • Lack of faith in God

He then moved directly to confront their doctrine with the Word of God. It doesn’t matter what a person says he believes. What matters is what is written in the Bible. We can count on it that if we do not read and study the Bible:

  • We will err
  • We will not understand the power of God and
  • We will likely believe and promote false doctrine

We can’t assume we are walking with the Lord if we don’t know the Word of God and don’t trust the power of God.
