Wherefore my sentence is, that we trouble not them, which from among the Gentiles are turned to God:
It is understood that James was not one of the Apostles but instead the pastor of the church in Jerusalem. James the Apostle had already been executed by this time. This James is believed to be the writer of the book of James and the half-brother of Jesus.[1]
The church in Jerusalem went through what appears to me to be somewhat of a “John the Baptist experience.” It decreased as the church in Antioch increased. But, at this moment, it was still the bedrock of the faith. At issue was the religious expectation to be placed upon the Gentiles who had been converted. Some of the sect of the Pharisees had believed in Christ but had not put off their old religious garments.
After hearing the sides, James, the pastor of the church in Jerusalem, gave his sentence to determine the will of God based upon:
- The testimony of Paul and Barnabas
- The testimony of Peter regarding the house of Cornelius
- The testimony of the Word of God, which agreed with them and not the sect of the Pharisees
When seeking the will of God concerning a dispute:
- Consider the testimony of others
- Consider the agreement of Scripture and
- Keep the sentence of your pastor
[1] Though anyone who understands the Word of God knows that is of little relevance.
