For the children of Israel shall abide many days without a king, and without a prince, and without a sacrifice, and without an image, and without an ephod, and without teraphim:
The text has a primary application concerning the northern kingdom of Israel. There would be an
absolute removal of them from their land after their fall to Assyria. It was more fully filled to the Jews overall when Judah fell to Babylon. In the case of the Jews, they were allowed to return to the land and restore their worship at the end of seventy years. But the ultimate application of the passage has yet to be fulfilled. It will be finally accomplished in the Tribulation and find the promise of verse 5 in the Millennial Kingdom of Christ.
There is a lesson for the New Testament era as well. God removes from us all that the world offers:
- The protection and provision of government
- The heritage and history of religion and even
- The satisfaction and self-will of idolatry
To bring us to the place where all we have is to turn to the Lord and seek Him.
It is then we may expect to know the Lord and His goodness.
