For they have sown the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind: it hath no stalk: the bud shall yield no meal: if so be it yield, the strangers shall swallow it up.
I’ve been thinking about the permissive will of God since a preacher recently pointed out that it was God’s will (or at least God said it would happen) that Jeroboam rebelled against Rehoboam. It was not the perfect will of God, nor was it even the good will of God for the nation of Israel to become divided. It was permitted by God, used by God for His purposes. But it would be wrong to say it was the best thing to have happened. Decades later, Hosea recorded the terrible consequences of Jeroboam’s entry into the permissive will of God.
That God permits us to do a thing does not mean it is a good thing to do:
- “God if it is your will, allow me to buy this car”
- “God if you do not want me to take this job, don’t let them hire me”
- “God, please let me move to this new place of residence”
Because we can do a thing, because God allows us to do it, even if it is a good choice for us, does not mean it is God’s will.
God allowed Jeroboam to succeed in his revolt against Judah. God allowed him to establish his own nation. God even forbade Rehoboam from attempting to take it from him. But it was not a good choice.
Jeroboam was cursed shortly thereafter. He not only left the kingdom, but he also left off the worship God had established for His people, and he led others away from the house of God He had placed them in.
It took many decades and multiple generations, but judgment did come. Hosea prophesied it all through this chapter.
Just because we are allowed to do a thing does not mean there won’t be terrible consequences.
Do we really want our Children’s children to be the ones who pay the ultimate price?
