But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man.
We tend these days only to use the word, judge, negatively. We define it as “to criticize or to condemn.” It doesn’t have to have a negative sense. A thing might be judged and approved. For example, I had my septic system inspected this week. The inspector went through his process and judged my septic to function correctly.
Another word that might be used to define it is “discern.” It is in this context we should view this verse. The spiritual man can compare “spiritual things with spiritual.” He can judge or discern the things he observes based upon what the Spirit of God has taught him in the Word of God.
Therefore, being “judged of no man” does not imply he is never criticized. The martyrs were indeed criticized and condemned by the unbelieving. It means that their motivations, message, and thoughts are beyond worldly understanding. A natural man or a carnal man would never understand why a spiritual man responds to the world around him as he does. To make a play on terms, because the natural and carnal man can’t judge the spiritual man, he often will judge the spiritual man.
