For what have I to do to judge them also that are without? do not ye judge them that are within?
The word “judge” means “to decide.” It can have a broad range of uses, such as:
The negative ones
- To try
- To condemn
- To punish
The more “neutral” ones
- To determine
- To distinguish
- To conclude
The positive ones
- To esteem
- To approve
Some surprising ones
- To decree
- To ordain
God uses the church body as a whole to make major spiritual decisions, such as to ordain a man into the Gospel ministry and to call a man to be its pastor. The church does not hire a pastor. The church determines the will of God concerning its pastor. Before Barnabas and Saul knew they were to be separated for missions work, God had already told the church.
No one can judge the one who stands before God. But inside the church body, God uses the Word of God, the man of God, and the church of God, to discern for its members what is the will of God.
