I am not worthy of the least of all the mercies, and of all the truth, which thou hast shewed unto thy servant; for with my staff I passed over this Jordan; and now I am become two bands.
Though Jacob was not worthy, God had been kind to him. He had gone out of the Promised Land with nothing but a staff. I see that as a tool. He had his parents to thank for training him in a livelihood and equipping him with a strong work ethic. But that is all he had. He returned, he said, with two bands. He had become so prosperous that, in his return to the Promised Land and preparation to meet Esau, he had divided his holdings into two companies. Indeed, God had been kind to him.
Jacob did reference his substance, but that of which he said he was not worthy was not substance. He said he was not worthy:
- Of God’s mercy or
- Of God’s truth
I think we would all agree with the first. Mercy is, by definition, unmerited.
If we deserved it and were worthy of it, then receiving it would not be merciful; it would be right, fair, and our due. We are not worthy of God’s mercy.
Further, we are not worthy of God’s truth. We are not worthy of the Word of God. We are not worthy of the illumination of the Holy Ghost upon the Word. We are not worthy of having received it, to have understood any portion of it, or to be granted the faith to respond to it.
The Bible connects Jesus Christ to the Word and to the truth. We surely agree that we are not worthy of Him.
