Take, I pray thee, my blessing that is brought to thee; because God hath dealt graciously with me, and because I have enough. And he urged him, and he took it.
I feel like I’m telling on myself, but I need to clear my conscience. Obviously, I’m not over it. :-)
A few weeks ago, I gave my neighbor an electric trolling motor. My intentions were good. He is very sick. I had put the motor on a for sale site and had offers, but I did not want to haggle. My neighbor likes boating, likes fishing, and I was sure he would appreciate it. He accepted it graciously.
A bit later, he called me over. As I approached, he reached out his hand. I could see he had some money. He said he wanted to give it to me for the motor. Now the embarrassing part. Even as I shook my head and insisted I had given him the motor, I accepted the money into my hand. Later it occurred to me that if I had sincerely not been interested in the money, I would not have taken it in the first place.
This is what I see happening in this passage. Esau and Jacob both said they had enough. They negotiated whether to receive the gift, but in the end, Esau took it. Jacob wanted to buy his brother’s favor, and Esau wanted to pretend to have no need. Neither had completely sincere motives.
To be generous without selfish motivation is difficult. It will not happen without intention.
But is the Christ-like thing.
