And Reuben returned unto the pit; and, behold, Joseph was not in the pit; and he rent his clothes.
And he returned unto his brethren, and said, The child is not; and I, whither shall I go?
Rueben found himself in a real pickle. He didn’t agree with his brothers, but he didn’t disagree either. He didn’t care for Joseph any more than they did, but he didn’t want to shed blood and didn’t want to hurt his father.
His brothers, who were not as willing followers as Rueben might have thought, had little interest in Rueben’s feelings on the matter. They didn’t care for him any more than they did for Joseph. I don’t think any of them cared about anyone but themselves.
Rueben’s trouble was in attempting to please both sides. He wanted to maintain his allegiance to his brothers, but he also wanted to please his father.
The answer to the solution would have been to consider Joseph (mostly to consider God). Had he put his foot down, called this wickedness, and stood with Joseph,
- He wouldn’t have been in this pickle.
- He would not have had to live with twenty years of guilt
- He would not have had to hide this from his father
Doing right is not always easy.
It is always right.
