We give thanks to God always for you all, making mention of you in our prayers;
There is always a reason to pray. I doubt that we understand that anywhere near the way we ought to, but there is always a reason to pray.
There is always someone for whom to pray. I am not sure we take that as seriously as we ought to, but there is always someone who needs our prayers.
That said, I woke up this morning[1] with a reason to pray. I was awakened by a call from my family that my dad had been taken by ambulance with a suspected stroke. Dad has had a few of them in the last several years. The last one set him back a lot. He was just beginning to regain his strength, where he could walk and exercise again. At the same time, Mom has been struggling with her health for some time. Signs of aging for both, I guess. But the two of them are in serious need of prayer right now.
With that on my mind, I read the words of the Apostle, who said of the believers in Thessalonica that he “(made) mention of you in our prayers.”
Making mention
That hardly seems adequate sometimes. To remember someone in trouble. To speak their name before the Lord. It seems like so little. It’s just a word or two, and the need can be so great. (Remember, the believers in Thessalonica suffered under terrible persecution for their faith.) It seems like such a little thing considering the severity of the situation.
Until we remember the One to whom we make mention
Almighty, all-powerful, eternal, ever-loving, and always merciful God. He is the One who cares more than anyone ever could. He is the One who knows more than anyone else ever will. He is the One who can do what no one else ever can.
It is no small thing to make mention to God of someone in prayer.
