Not in the lust of concupiscence, even as the Gentiles which know not God:
To read the passage in its context, it is evident that the Apostle placed great pathos and passion in his words. He is virtually begging them to refrain from sexual sin. I see the word, “command.” I also note he says, “this is the will of God.” But he also uses the term, “beseech” at least twice.
In the phrase, “lust of concupiscence” is a sense of the earnestness of the Word of God concerning this subject. It is a passion for passion. More, it is an unnatural desire for unnatural desire. God provides for the fulfillment of intimate passion in marriage. Nowhere else.
Notice the Words “sanctification”[1] and “honor.”[2] These are the lofty ideals of the Holy Spirit. They are at war with the lust of concupiscence. It is not possible to have both. Sanctification and honor will drive away the lust of concupiscence, or else the lust of concupiscence will destroy sanctification and honor.
It is the will of God that we possess our bodies in sanctification and honor, but it is up to the individual
- To receive this commandment
- To walk in it
- To thereby please God and
- To abound in it more and more
Our society today disregards sanctification and places little value on honor. The Christian who obeys the Lord will have to “swim upstream” if they are to please the Lord. It will truly be different than the world to behave sexually in sanctification and honor.
[1] Separated to God, different from the world. It has to do with holiness.
