Ye shall offer no strange incense thereon, nor burnt sacrifice, nor meat offering; neither shall ye pour drink offering thereon.
As I understand the Tabernacle, the priest would perform his service in a specific order.
He would approach the brazen altar
And there, the sacrifice was offered. Sin must be judged in blood. No other service to God is acceptable prior to sacrifice.
He would approach the laver
Here the priest would wash. He would have been soiled from his work at the altar. Our sins are judged and forgiven in Christ. Our lives are then cleansed through the washing of the water by the Word.
He would approach the first chamber of the Tabernacle
Inside was the table of shewbread representing Christ as the bread of life, the golden candlestick representing Christ as the light of the world, and the altar of incense, representing the prayers of the saints rising to the Lord.
Notice particularly that this altar only had incense. Never a sacrifice. Approaching the throne of grace in prayer must always and only be done on the merits of the sacrifice of Christ, never on the merits of any effort of our own. Prayer is to be freely, boldly before the Lord. It is never appropriate to come on the credit of religion, good deeds, or personal sacrifice. Come to God through Christ alone.
