It shall be a perpetual statute for your generations throughout all your dwellings, that ye eat neither fat nor blood.
It was to be a perpetual statute for every generation of the Jews that they “eat neither fat nor blood.” Some Jewish teachers believe these statutes apply strictly to animals sacrificed, but for my purposes, that is moot.
The reasoning between the two restrictions was different. The Jews were not to eat the blood out of respect for the life lost on their behalf. They, as we, must not take lightly that there is no forgiveness or sins and no approach to God without the shedding of blood. The life of the sacrifice, given on their behalf, looked forward to the life and death of Jesus Christ.
The Jews were not to eat the fat purely because it was the best. The savor, the flavor of almost every food, is found in the fat content. They chose not to eat the fat and gave God the very best. They also trained themselves to focus less on “the finer, more pleasant things of life.”
The dietary restrictions are nailed to the cross and do not apply to New Testament believers. The lessons of the two statutes remain true:
- God deserves the very best
- Men do best when weaned from worldly pleasures
