Or if he touch the uncleanness of man, whatsoever uncleanness it be that a man shall be defiled withal, and it be hid from him; when he knoweth of it, then he shall be guilty.
It’s an old axiom but true; ignorance of the law is no excuse (although all that is in me thinks it should be because they keep adding to and changing the laws). This is born out in our passage. Though a man may not know he is doing something contrary, he is still guilty if he has done it.
The word guilty means, “to offend,” “to trespass,” or “to destroy.” Consider, a person can offend another without meaning to. A person can trespass where he is not supposed to be without knowing it. A person can damage or destroy a thing without knowing his action will do that. Whether he knew it or not, he was guilty.
A person can do a dangerous thing not knowing it is dangerous, but he is still dead when he fails.
Even so, a person does not have to fight purposefully against God to be at enmity with Him. If He does not come to realize that and confess his sin, he will pay the ultimate price – eternal hell.
Ignorance of this is no excuse.
