Thou shalt not sacrifice unto the LORD thy God any bullock, or sheep, wherein is blemish, or any evilfavouredness: for that is an abomination unto the LORD thy God.
I’m guessing the motive most people would have for offering an imperfect sacrifice to the Lord would be monetary or practicality. An animal with a:
- Wound
- Blemish or some other
- Evilfavoredness
would be less valuable to sell or to breed. One would certainly not wish to carry on whatever was wrong into future generations. On the other hand, if the animal must be culled, offering it as a sacrifice would seem like a practical way to get value from the animal with little loss.
But I don’t believe God’s motive in requiring a sacrifice without blemish had anything to do with the value of the gift. It was instead what, or rather who, the gift represented. The blemished sacrifice was an abomination to the Lord because it was a gross misrepresentation of His Only Begotten Son.
By the way, this is why it matters that the living sacrifice we present the Lord with our bodies be holy, acceptable unto the Lord.[1] The Christian life represents Jesus and what He has done for us. Imagine, if the unbelieving world can look at modern Christianity and pick it apart as they do, how abominable it must be to the Lord.
Thank God for grace and mercy. But let us ask the Lord for His help to prove to the world what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.
[1] Romans 12:1-2 (KJV)
I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.
And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
