Deuteronomy 18:19 (KJV)
And it shall come to pass, that whosoever will not hearken unto my words which he shall speak in my name, I will require it of him.
The previous verse speaks of a Prophet God raises up. The word Prophet is capitalized, and the general consensus, even among ancient Jewish students of God’s Word, is that it is messianic.
No one is forced to follow Christ. Every individual has the liberty of conscience to hearken to the voice of the Lord or to turn from Him. But there is a caveat. “Whosoever will not hearken unto my words…I will require it of him.“
No one gets away with ignoring God.
An application comes quickly upon us as in Deuteronomy 19, God said
Deuteronomy 19:11-13 (KJV)
But if any man hate his neighbour, and lie in wait for him, and rise up against him, and smite him mortally that he die, and fleeth into one of these cities:
Then the elders of his city shall send and fetch him thence, and deliver him into the hand of the avenger of blood, that he may die.
Thine eye shall not pity him, but thou shalt put away the guilt of innocent blood from Israel, that it may go well with thee.
The outgoing Governor of Oregon, Kate Brown, yesterday, December 14, 2022, commuted the sentence of all seventeen persons on death row in the state to life. In part, she said, “unlike previous commutations… they are not based on any “rehabilitative efforts” by the individuals on death row.
“Instead, it reflects the recognition that the death penalty is immoral,” she said. “It is an irreversible punishment that does not allow for correction; is wasteful of taxpayer dollars; does not make communities safer; and cannot be and never has been administered fairly and equitably.”
In other words, she commuted their sentences out of pity.
There will be no consequences she experiences for her action in her lifetime. I understand the incoming governor agrees with her position. But the assurance of the Bible is Hebrews 9:27 (KJV)
And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:
The Governor will stand before God one day and give an account. My prayer is that she repents before that day.
Revelation 20:12-14 (KJV)
And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.
And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.
And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.
