And he shall dwell in that city, until he stand before the congregation for judgment, and until the death of the high priest that shall be in those days: then shall the slayer return, and come unto his own city, and unto his own house, unto the city from whence he fled.
The provision of the city of refuge was for the protection of the one who had accidentally slain another and who might be then slain by those who loved the one now dead. One could flee to a city of refuge and dwell safely there until he faces the judgment of his peers or else until the death of the high priest.
There are all sorts of theories about why the high priest’s death would be the point at which he might be set free to return home. The Jews, they say, taught that it was because the death of the high priest would have been such a heartbreaking case that the death of anyone else would no longer matter. I’m not buying that. The death of a loved one is in no way mollified by the death of a national figure, even one who is spiritual.
The high priest represents our great High Priest, Jesus Christ.
- The reason for his confinement was sin
- The accuser of this brother is Satan but
- The one who is offended is Almighty God
Our faith serves as a place of refuge, offering reconciliation with God
The death of God’s Son, Jesus Christ, sets us free to come boldly to the throne of grace.
But our high priest rose again. He came up from the grave and in His resurrection we, who have come to Him, gain power over sin, over death, and over the grave.
Jesus has prepared a place for us in our Father’s house. Because of His death, burial, and resurrection, we await the day when we may come to our own house in our own city, whose builder and maker is God.
