And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.
There is a deaf preacher named Fred Adams who came to the Pacific Northwest a few times, maybe twenty years ago. He traveled with a group of “singers” who were all deaf. They signed to a recording of a song called “Please Search the Book Again.”[1] It was a dramatic representation of this passage.
My personal understanding is that God writes every name in the book of life and only blots it out if, at the time of one’s death, they have not come to Christ as Saviour. It’s a bit of a stretch because, at the same time, the Bible teaches that all of us are born sinners and will, unless we come to Christ before our time of death, go to hell. I believe the conflict is intended. It is the spiritual battle between heaven and hell. It is our eternal fate to go to hell, but the love of God fights to keep it from happening.
That battle rages in the souls of men. The lost, blind to the gospel, refuse the prodding of the Holy Spirit (and they are prodded). The saved, anxious to see friends and family saved as they are, plead in prayer and in witness for the blindness to fall from their eyes. God, in His great love for souls, sends preacher after preacher to tell them of His Son who gave His life for them.
Ultimately, “whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.”
See this word as one more witness pleading with you to repent, turn to Jesus, and be saved.
