With whom the kings of the earth have committed fornication, and the inhabitants of the earth have been made drunk with the wine of her fornication.
That the “great whore” of Revelation seventeen is a religion, there can be no doubt. The term fornication, used repeatedly in the chapter concerning her, cannot be physically sexual. The context reveals she is a system and not a person. Sexual sins often refer to idolatry and betrayal of one’s love for God. In verse three, the use of the word blasphemy supports this conclusion. She is a religious system. I believe her to be Catholicism.[1]
This religion:
Corrupts nations
History is filled with the wicked results of those nations of Europe that were, and still are, under her grasp. Whole countries in the Islands and South America are still drunken with the corruption of her doctrines. The United States has leaders blindly corrupted in some measure because of the errors they learned in her churches.
Destroys people
The errors of Mariolatry, infant baptism, relics, and mass, to name only a few, have so corrupted the followers of anti-Christian religion that it is a wonder when anyone comes out from her and professes pure faith in Jesus Christ.
It is likely that, in the end, the world’s major religions will unite with her. We see signs of that even now. But there is little doubt that the one-world religion of the Tribulation is the Catholic religious system. And it is destined to be overthrown by Jesus Christ.
[1] I first learned this in 1979. After more than forty years of study and preaching I have found no reason to question that teaching.
