And he had a son, whose name was Saul, a choice young man, and a goodly: and there was not among the children of Israel a goodlier person than he: from his shoulders and upward he was higher than any of the people.
Israel’s desire for a king was a compromise with the world around them and an abject rebellion against God. Samuel had taken the message of God to them and warned them of the negatives of choosing a king. Nevertheless, they insisted on one anyway.
God’s warnings came to pass just as he said. Interestingly, the kingdom was divided under Rehoboam as much as anything due to these very negatives God said a king would bring upon them.
I would like to note an unexpected (not to God, of course, but to me) harm of choosing a king for themselves. A very good man, and his family, were destroyed because they made him be what God never intended him to be.
Saul was
- Young
- Choice and
- Goodly
He was
- Hard-working
- Conscientious and
- Respectful
He was
- Handsome
- Humble and
- Content
Until he was made what God never made him to be.
The people insisted they wanted a king like all the other nations around them. The eventual devastation of Saul, his sons, and his daughters resulted.
Godliness, with contentment, is great gain.[1]
