Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me.
What an example of the difference between religion and a genuine walk with the Lord.
This young man had a desire for eternal life
That’s why he had come to Jesus with the question. He knew Jesus had the answer.
This young man had zealously practiced religion
He had kept the Ten Commandments from his youth.
This young man knew that neither desire nor religion had satisfied his soul
“What lack I yet?” He knew something was lacking.
This young man would not make the transition from religion to relationship
He was unwilling to follow Jesus. The Bible says it was because he had great possessions.
We must be careful not to divorce ourselves from the application because we think we are somehow less fortunate than he. Anything that prevents us from following Jesus is as great a possession as his.
This is what faith is.
It is following Jesus above all else.
- It is not being a good person.
- It is not doing all the right things.
- It is not even having a heart for the things of God.
Faith, a relationship with Christ, is removing anything that stands in the way of following Christ.
