And a stranger will they not follow, but will flee from him: for they know not the voice of strangers.
I recently saw a couple of articles concerning two modern churches connected to the Southern Baptist Convention.
One was of Andy Stanley preaching a disassociation with the Bible. The article claims that Stanley “asserts that the Scripture has been “dismantled…by the realities of life.”[1]
The other article included a short clip of Andy Wood, the new pastor at Saddleback Community Church, describing Jesus as a party man and the purpose of Christ’s coming to invite us to the most incredible party ever.[2]
Both articles included a brief scan of the mega-gatherings to hear these modern ear ticklers. My heart was broken as I glanced at these people, young and old, listening to such irreverent speech and utter heresy. These are people, many of whom have presumably heard the gospel message of salvation and claimed to have embraced it. Yet there they were, drinking in the words of strange doctrine.
I am afraid for them.
Jesus said of His sheep that they flee from the stranger’s voice. If these people were followers of Christ, they would have walked out long ago.
That they have not tells me Christ does not know them any more than they know Christ.
And here is a lesson for both pastor and the people, regardless of the teacher or the teaching, be careful that we look to worship Christ and not just look for a worship experience.
