Moses therefore gave unto you circumcision; (not because it is of Moses, but of the fathers;) and ye on the sabbath day circumcise a man.
Albert Barnes says, “the Jews, … ascribed the appointment of circumcision to Moses, yet he (Jesus) is careful to remind them that it was in observance long before Moses.”
That may seem like a technicality. After all, the Old Testament is the Old Testament, is it not? Well, no. The Old Testament describes several different ages or dispensations. Jesus clearly distinguished the difference between the dispensation involving the fathers and that involving Moses. While the Mosaic Law carries many patriarchal elements into it, the two are distinct, and the distinctions mattered to Jesus. Therefore, they ought to matter to us.
In this case, it was the issue of circumcision. Jesus reminded them that Moses did not deliver to the Jews the ordinance of circumcision but that it came originally from the fathers, namely Abraham. The concept of dispensations is the heart of rightly dividing the world of truth.[1]
Tithing carries over to the New Testament church in much the same manner that circumcision carried over from the fathers to Moses. Tithing is not technically Mosaic but Abrahamic. On the other hand, circumcision does not carry over from Mosaic to the New Testament church because the Bible replaces it in this dispensation with baptism.
If Jesus would make the distinction between the dispensations, so must we.

Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
