The Pharisees therefore said unto him, Thou bearest record of thyself; thy record is not true.
Every Christian desires that “the communication of [his] faith” would be “effectual.”[1] However, it should not surprise the Christian a great deal that the unbelieving challenge our reasons for faith. They made those same charges, not only against the original disciples but against Christ Himself.
John 15:20 (KJV)
Remember the word that I said unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord. If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you; if they have kept my saying, they will keep yours also.
Unbelievers today like to protest the Christian faith claiming we are guilty of “logical fallacies.” They used the same tactic against Christ. He can’t, they argued, bear record of Himself. Jesus countered their objection by pointing out that they had overlooked the other witnesses.
The same is true today. Those who deny Christians have a strong argument for their faith base their denials on assumptions.[2] They choose to overlook those testimonies of fact that would be legitimate witnesses if the subject were any other than Christ.
Ephesians 6:10 (KJV)
Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.
[1] Philemon 1:6 (KJV)
That the communication of thy faith may become effectual by the acknowledging of every good thing which is in you in Christ Jesus.
[2] Assuming, for instance, that we have no evidence or that our evidence is not legitimate.
