Mine eye also shall see my desire on mine enemies, and mine ears shall hear my desire of the wicked that rise up against me.
We may well find a test of Christian character within this very passage.
It has to do with our desire for our enemies.
- Do we want God to destroy them? Or
- Do we want God to save them?
Either one would resolve the conflict between us and them.
Their true anger is against the Lord.
- It is He that has set the standard they choose to reject.
- It is He that has set the bounds of heaven or hell.
- It is He who has determined that there is none other name whereby we must be saved.[1]
And yet God, who is the actual target of their hatred, is longsuffering toward usward, not will that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.[2]
God’s desire for the salvation of souls is so strong He gave His only begotten Son.[3] Christ’s desire for the salvation of souls is so powerful that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.[4]
What is it you desire God do to your enemies?
Is your desire consistent with what we know to be the desire of God for His enemies?
[1] Acts 4:12 (KJV)
Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.
[2] 2 Peter 3:9 (KJV)
The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
[3] John 3:16 (KJV)
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
[4] Romans 5:8 (KJV)
But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
