He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.
Barnes notes says of the secret place, “the place to which He Himself withdrew to be alone, and where no stranger, and not even one of the family, would venture to intrude. Nothing could more certainly denote friendship; nothing could more certainly make protection sure,”
We had a strict rule as our boys grew up. That they were never to come into our bedroom, it was my wife, and I’s secret place. It was inaccessible to them. Even when they approached adult years, they might follow my wife and me down the hall but knew to stop at the doorway to our bedroom.
But when my youngest son married, his wife hadn’t grown up with that rule. They would be at our home, and my son would be shocked, startled, maybe even frightened, when his young wife would casually enter our bedroom without hesitation. It took him some time to come to where he felt as much liberty as she did. She joked with my wife and me, “Now you know what it’s like to have a daughter.”[a]
The Psalmist said God has a secret place like that. And the Psalmist implies we are invited to dwell in that place.
May I say Christianity is not meant to be mere “fire protection?” Salvation indeed secures us from hell. But God’s plan for His children is far greater than that. God wants us to “abide under the shadow of the Almighty.”
The one who merely comes for rescue might not have come far enough for true salvation.
[a] I hear they now have the same rule for their children
