Confounded be all they that serve graven images, that boast themselves of idols: worship him, all ye gods.
We tend to be a judgmental lot. Because of this nature, we are prone to understand the Word of God like a poker, jabbing the side of those who don’t agree with us.
So, we interpret this passage as a poke against those who serve idols. People who are – not us.
- The Muslim is confounded
- The Catholic is confounded
- The Hindu is confounded
- The Buddhist is confounded
- The Mormon is confounded
- The JW is confounded even
- The Jew is confounded
They don’t understand the Bible like we do because they don’t serve the same god we do.
But do we not know Christians who go through periods of confusion, depression, and emotional distress? Would that not constitute being confounded? Have we not experienced periods in our lives that could be described as confounded?
Perhaps a more practical and biblical way to see this passage would be as a diagnosis. When we experience times when we are confounded we ought to take that as a warning that we may be serving images and idols, and that though we claim to serve God, at that moment we have made ourselves gods.
