Deliver my soul, O LORD, from lying lips, and from a deceitful tongue.
Satan is a deceiver; he consistently lies to us and deceives the world. He lures people away from the Word of God, and those who are ensnared in his deception often lead others astray.
The deceitful tongue:
- Enslaves those who are lost
- Injures new believers in Christ
- Confuses those who are growing in their faith
- Infuriates those who are dedicated to God’s work
However, the most perilous tongue of all is our own. It would be unwise to forget the warnings in Scripture:
Jeremiah 17:9 (KJV) reminds us:
The heart is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked: who can know it?
And 1 John 1:8 (KJV) cautions:
If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
Matthew 7:3-5 (KJV) further emphasizes the importance of self-awareness:
And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother’s eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?
Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in thine own eye?
Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother’s eye.
Indeed, the lies we tell ourselves, the times we are deceived without realizing it, are more fearful than anything spoken to us, about us, or around us. Our soul’s most significant need is to be delivered from the snares of self-deception, which often remain hidden from our awareness.
