Let my cry come near before thee, O LORD: give me understanding according to thy word.
Let my supplication come before thee: deliver me according to thy word.
The word “according” means:
• In agreement with
• Suitable for
• In harmony with
What good is understanding that is not in agreement with and in harmony with God’s Word? Any wisdom that is not suitable for God’s Word is earthly, sensual, and devilish.
“The imagination of their hearts was only evil continually.”[1]
There is a wisdom that is foolishness with God.
Such is modern science. It’s not that science has no harmony with God’s Word. The most famous scientists of the past all based their studies and research on the truth of God’s Word. I suspect that much of the modern world’s animosity towards the United States and our founders is that they operated from the foundation of God’s Word.
The Psalmist simply asked for the most reasonable of things: “LORD, teach me to harmonize what I know in the world with what I learn in the Bible.”
He goes on to ask for one other most reasonable thing: “Lord, give me the deliverance You promise in the Word of God.” In other words, he asked that his understanding of salvation be in harmony and agreement with the Bible.
While this is reasonable, it isn’t often what the religions of the world want from God. Religion devises its own theories of deliverance and then expects whatever deity they have conjured to provide it.
Speaking of agreement, wouldn’t it be wisest to ask God to help our world view be in harmony with His Word?

And GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.
